Hearthstone Reign of the Black Empire interview: A new twist on the Old Gods!

Hearthstone’s next expansion is none other than Reign of the Black Empire! Announced at BlizzCon 2026, this expansion features the return of the Old Gods and new cards galore. Esports.gg sat down with Hearthstone executive producer Nathan Lyons-Smith and senior design manager Brenden Sewell for an interview!

We talked about the lore and inspiration behind the Reign of the Black Empire cards, the Old Gods, the Assemble keyword, the new Monk class, the arrival of a special two-versus-two (2v2) Tavern Brawl, and more.

Hearthstone Reign of the Black Empire interview

In the interview with esports.gg at BlizzCon 2026, Sewell shared that Reign of the Black Empire drew some inspiration from Hearthstone’s previous expansion involving the Old Gods. However, each Old God has a new twist. That is, the Reign of the Black Empire cards represent the Old Gods from when they were at their peak.

For example, N’Zoth keeps the Deathrattle-focused identity, but the new cards expand on those synergies to keep up with Hearthstone’s modern power level.

• Esports.gg: “When I first saw the Old Gods in the Opening Ceremony, I was like, ‘Whispers of the Old Gods?’ Then the Titans appeared, and they fought against N’Zoth’s Black Empire. And Hearthstone Battlegrounds has these Aberrations, which are reminiscent of C’Thun, N’Zoth, etc. decks from back in the day. What are your favorite WoW or Hearthstone-inspired-by-WoW references in the new cards?”
• Sewell: “We are certainly bringing a lot of that play from the Old Gods expansion that is near and dear to our designer hearts into the new experience while also making sure that we’re putting a special twist on each of the Old Gods. This was 10,000 years in the past. These were the heightened expressions, the highest power versions of the Old Gods, and so we’re making sure that the impact that each of those Old Gods has in play feels appropriately dramatic there. So you’re going to see throughlines of inspiration. You use the example of N’Zoth — the kind of Deathrattle synergies that we’re used to seeing previously in Hearthstone — but then expanded upon in sort of the modern contemporary power level of Hearthstone, as well as the flavor of this new expansion and the time setting that is taking place.”

For context, Hearthstone’s Whispers of the Old Gods expansion launched back in 2016. The Black Empire, meanwhile, refers to a civilization ruled by the Old Gods after their arrival on Azeroth in World of Warcraft (WoW) lore. This empire was later eliminated by Titan-forged armies. After the Fourth War, N’Zoth brought this empire back. Champions of Azeroth then defeated the empire.

Hearthstone Journal to focus on story and lore

Additionally, those who love story and lore can look forward to a revamped Hearthstone Journal in Reign of the Black Empire. According to Sewell and Lyons-Smith, the first chapter features lightweight, linear quests that unfold week by week. Branching narratives may arrive later. These quests involve completing specific card-based objectives, such as fighting the Old Gods and knocking out the Titans, rather than custom gameplay scenarios for now.

• Sewell: “So the original narrative that is going to appear in the first chapter of the Journal is strictly linear. It’s going to unfold as the weeks occur, and you are committing to these quests, and we’re unfolding the narrative for the course of the expansions. […] I think a branching path narrative where there’s some player agency and choice there is a pretty good idea.”

Reign of the Black Empire decks and cards

During the interview, Lyons-Smith told esports.gg that he’s excited about the return of Yogg-Saron gameplay. He also ensured players of the game’s balance. Sewell, meanwhile, hinted at a Paladin deck featuring the new Paladin legendary.

• Esports.gg: “Based on the revealed information so far, what would you say is a particular deck or deck archetype — perhaps like a new-era Yogg or Casino Mage — that you’re a fan of or most excited about for folks to play?”
• Sewell: “There is a Paladin archetype that we, unfortunately, have not revealed the Paladin legendary for it yet, but it interacts with the symbol in a very cool way. And that is my standout favorite, personally, from the deck. Of the stuff that has been revealed, I will say the Yogg-Saron Old God that we landed is very, very [playful, so] that’s what’s going to entertain.”
• Lyons-Smith: “Yeah, definitely Yogg and letting Yogg take the wheel is the fun bit. Different flavors of Yogg over the years have been very powerful. We’ll have fun out the door and then continue to balance the meta and make sure that it stays fun and healthy. But as someone who plays a lot of Millhouse Mage these days, I’m excited for a little bit of Yogg there, too.”

According to Hearthstone’s official card library, the Paladin class’ Reign of the Black Empire card reveals begin on Sept. 23.

Hearthstone gets new Monk class

Speaking of Hearthstone classes, Lyons-Smith mentioned the new Monk one. He was tight-lipped about the details, but encouraged players to analyze the trailer closely.

• Lyons-Smith: “If you look very closely at the trailer, you can see some hints of what you can expect. I’ll leave it at that and let you all and other millions of Hearthstone players theorycraft of what that is. But really, we’ll do a big, awesome campaign to get everyone excited for the first expansion of next year with the Monk. And when we’re ready to do that, [we] hope to be engaging with you all then. But for right now, we’ve got the updated Journal with the narrative [where] we bring it together, we’ve got Aberrations coming to Battlegrounds, and then, of course, the Reign of the Black Empire expansion with the Assemble mechanic coming very soon.”

Although Monk enters Hearthstone in 2027, players who wish to commemorate the class now can get all three pre-purchase bundles for Reign of the Black Empire and receive the special Way of the Monk Coin.

Hearthstone team talks about the Assemble mechanic

In terms of the aforementioned Assemble mechanic, it’s a new keyword in Reign of the Black Empire. It adds a minion to a player’s hand and replaces part of the card text with text from another minion in a curated pool. When asked about Assemble’s development process, Sewell shared how the Hearthstone team wanted to push that feeling of joy created by the Discover mechanic even further.

• Sewell: “We wanted to start by going wide and seeing if we can push that sort of joy of the Discover keyword even further within Hearthstone and fulfill this fantasy of merging two cards together. And so we started sort of intentionally very unbounded in the exploration there, but then being mindful that we needed to identify fairly early on what are the outliers that are going to cause potentially problematic game patterns — and being able to rein that in while still preserving this joyful experience and some of the wild, very Hearthstone, flavorful moments of these wide-swing turns. And we think we landed in a really good spot with that — with striking that balance and making it still wide enough that it feels like you are genuinely going to, over the course of an entire season, over the course of two years of having the mechanic within Standard rotation, still be unfolding new discoveries, new combinations that you wouldn’t have expected.”

Hearthstone gets 2v2 Tavern Brawl

As for the 2v2 Tavern Brawl, we learned that it’s Hearthstone’s take on Battlegrounds Duos. Players have at least two weeks to queue into it solo or with a friend. This 2v2 Tavern also involves a portal that can pass a card to one’s teammate before going on cooldown. Players can even use new emotes to communicate with each other.

According to the Hearthstone team, the goal of the inaugural version of this 2v2 Tavern Brawl is to gather player feedback. They would like players to share what works, what doesn’t work, and what they would like to see next.

Hearthstone Warchief Tavern Brawl teased at BlizzCon 2026

After our interview, the game’s dedicated BlizzCon 2026 panel teased the Hearthstone Warchief Tavern Brawl. Hearthstone Warchief features a preconstructed format involving 99 unique cards plus a new hero power that lets players summon their Warchief to the battlefield.

The preview showed Garrosh, Thrall, and, interestingly, Jaina. Therefore, it’s implied that the Hearthstone Warchief Tavern Brawl also involves important characters from the Alliance.
